Data caveats methodology

Every standing data caveat in one methodological place: partial coverage, not real-time, source methodology varies, sample rows, historical snapshots, no legal/compliance advice, no causal attribution, no live tracking, and no paid or source-inaccessible values. Why each exists and how it is applied.

static reference · data June 5, 2026

Warconomy applies a fixed set of data caveats to every figure: coverage is partial, nothing is real-time, source methodology varies, sample rows are labeled, released snapshots are historical and frozen, nothing is legal or compliance advice, figures are associative not causal, there is no live tracking, and no paid or source-inaccessible value is ever published. Each is a deliberate methodological constraint, not a disclaimer of convenience.

  • 9 standing data caveats, each with its rationale.
  • Mirrors the per-figure caveats at /caveats and the FAQ grouping at /faq/caveats.
  • Enforced by the no-overclaim audit.

The standing data caveats

Partial coverage

Coverage is selective and incomplete. The absence of a figure is not evidence of the absence of an effect; gaps are tracked as data needs, not hidden.

Not real-time

Every value is a manually maintained, source-linked static figure with an as-of and review date. There is no live feed and no automated refresh.

Source methodology varies

Different sources define and measure the same concept differently. Figures are not silently combined across incompatible methodologies; units and bases are stated.

Sample rows

Some values are sample/illustrative and are labeled as such. Sample figures are never presented as current data.

Historical snapshots

Released versions are frozen; older snapshots reflect what was known then. Historical values are not retroactively edited to match later revisions.

No legal or compliance advice

This is an economic-impact reference, not legal, sanctions-compliance, or regulatory advice. Sanctions topics restate this explicitly.

No causal attribution

Indicators are tracked alongside conflicts and chokepoints, not attributed as their cause, unless a cited source supports the causal claim.

No live tracking

Chokepoint and shadow-fleet topics are not vessel trackers or real-time monitors; they summarize source-reported economic impact.

No paid or source-inaccessible values

A value is only published when it is directly verifiable from an accessible source. Paywalled, chart-only, or otherwise unverifiable figures are listed as data needs instead.
